Buttons for Garments: Materials, Sizes and Applications

Choose for the garment and fastening method
Start with the garmentβs fabric weight, button placement, closure design and intended use. Button diameter, thickness, hole arrangement or shank style must work with the buttonhole or attachment method.
For uniforms, denim and frequently used garments, consider how the fastening will be handled and cared for. Confirm the choice with the garment construction team.
Review material and finish
Compare the required appearance, colour, surface finish and feel with the garment design. Check that the button complements other hardware and remains consistent with the approved reference.
Where care or use conditions are important, include buttons in a garment sample and evaluate them under relevant conditions. Confirm any product-specific requirements with the supplier.
Approve before bulk production
Check sample dimensions, finish, attachment and compatibility with the planned buttonhole and sewing process. Review the result on the actual fabric, not only as a loose component.
Record the approved size, colour and finish. Keep a retained sample or clear image reference to support quality checks and repeat orders.
